Wallace L. Fleming
(1910 - 1998)
Inducted:   1984

Wally Fleming is recognized by his peers and contemporaries as the consummate professional. Fleming was not only a highly motivated goal setter, but a “barrier buster,” never content to just achieve a goal, he liked to go one step beyond. He is the record holder for having organized more JA companies in one year – a total of 401 operating in 26 business centers in 1967.

When Fleming joined Junior Achievement as a program director in Detroit in1949, he brought with him eighteen years of business experience in sales and management. He soon became CEO for JA in Southeast Michigan, a position he held for 19 years. During this time he was not only a consistent leader in terms of program numbers, but was also an innovative fund raiser and a creative contributor to public relations.

Fleming took a program that was $18,000 in debt and turned it into the best financed area of his day. He attracted top leadership to his board and committees, and under his leadership, JA in Southeast Michigan was a pace setter for the rest of the country.

In 1968, Fleming joined the headquarters staff as vice president of the western region. In this role, he directed his efforts to upgrade the quality of leadership in the areas throughout the region and in his final year, became metro area coordinator serving as liaison between headquarters and metro areas in planning and developing services of mutual benefit.

In community activities, Fleming’s interest had a wide range spanning memberships in the Detroit Economic Club, Athletic Club, Press Club, Sales & Marketing Club, and the Detroit Public Relations Society.

As a creative innovator and “barrier buster” goal setter, Wally Fleming has left his mark indelibly on Junior Achievement at all levels.
