During his 30 years with JA, Marty Lee was a rare leader, combining compassion, ethics, vision and the courage to make tough decisions.
Lee began his career in 1970 as the program director for JA in Atlanta. He was named the CSO for Jackson, Mississippi, in 1973, where his success helped identify him as one of the organization’s upcoming leaders.
In 1977, Lee joined the headquarters office, where he helped develop, launch, and grow JA’s first in-school program - Project Business. Following his role at headquarters, Lee returned to the field in 1982; first as president in Orlando, then as VP of operations in New York City.
Returning to headquarters in 1986, Lee became the organization’s first VP of training. Soon after, he was asked to lead the personnel department, where he grew to become an expert in the HR arena, holding various positions in the department including senior VP of human resources.
During his 10 years heading the HR functions of the organization, Lee transformed the department. He led the charge to make JA health insurance a self-funded program, provide a legally defensible compensation system, establish consistent organization-wide personnel policies, and modify the pension program to make it more in line with contemporary business trends.
In 1998, Lee was named executive vice president and COO at headquarters, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. During this tenure, JA’s technological abilities grew leaps and bounds and the first online curricula were implemented. Marty’s calm and wise demeanor helped lead the organization into the 21st century, where the number of students reached doubled to more than 4 million.
After leaving behind an unrivaled legacy at JA, Lee became president of TelecomPioneers, the largest industry specific non-profit in the world, and major partner of JA.
