Allen Kirtley’s Junior Achievement career began in 1962 as program director for JA of Owensboro. Soon after, Kirtley opened a JA office in Lexington, Ky., where he served as executive director.

Identified as a rising star in the organization, Kirtley transferred to Pittsburgh in 1966 as program director. During his tenure, student enrollment more than doubled and the office won numerous national awards. Akron, Ohio, was Kirtley’s next challenge, and his record of success continued to grow. In 1969, Kirtley went to JA of Greater Atlanta and during his five years, operating income increased 75 percent and two capital campaigns generated nearly $500,000.

In 1973, Kirtley’s well-established reputation led him to his first Headquarters position when he was named Midwest regional VP. In 1978, Allen was named National vice president – programs. He secured a $400,000 grant from the Kellogg Foundation to develop and implement the semester program, and paved the way for numerous other grants to support high school programming.

In 1982, Allen was named President of JA of Wisconsin. During his six years of leadership, Milwaukee realized substantial increased in its annual income (150 percent), fund balance (nearly $1 million), operating revenue ($500,000), and student participation (164 percent).

Kirtley then became president of JA in Los Angeles, where the office experienced a 65 percent student growth and a 53 percent reduction in cost per student.

Kirtley received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Charles R. Hook Award in 1987 for his outstanding performance as a Chief Staff Officer.

Prior to his retirement in 1994, his support of JA’s International effort was tremendous – providing training for new JA presidents in Argentina, China, Armenia, and Japan.

Kirtley’s professionalism, expertise, and enthusiasm have propelled Junior Achievement to a greater presence in every place he has called “home” – however brief his stay.
