2006 HIGHLIGHTS

Students from New York City and visiting students from JA
Japan were able to visit the CBS
Early Show
during their Job Shadow experience.

On Capitol Hill, students from 11 JA areas job-shadowed the
offices of nearly two-dozen members of Congress and federal
agency personnel. Shadows are seen here with Sen. Lamar
Alexander (R-Tenn., left) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev., right).

2005 HIGHLIGHTS

More than 550 students participated in this year's Job Shadow
Day on February 2 in New York City. The students pictured here
had the opportunity to participate in the taping of CNN's
American Morning with Bill Hemmer and Soledad O'Brien.

During last year’s Job Shadow events, JA of Poland reached
nearly 16,000 students, and involved more than 6,000
companies. They plan to surpass those numbers with the many
events and activities planned for 2005. A JA of Poland student

2004 HIGHLIGHTS

CALIFORNIA
- "San Diego Sunny" was interviewed on NBC 7/39 promoting
job shadowing during 3 segments while students in the
background waved signs. FOX 6 News went LIVE with San Diego
Sunny during 2 segments at the Careers in Hospitality
Breakfast thanking the hospitality industry for committing to
host 500 job shadows.
- In Monterey County (a part of JA Santa Clara County,
Inc.) students shadowed Superior Court Judge Robert Moody, and
Monterey County Sheriff Gordon Sonne.
- News from the Orange County Burrow... Shadows appeared at
Disneyland and the Coast Guard.
COLORADO
- Participants included: Frontier Airlines, Pepsi Bottling,
Denver Broncos, Best Buy, Pikes Peak International Raceway, KUSA, KCNC and Fox 31 News.
CONNECTICUT
- Stamford, CT had a very successful job shadow day on
February 1st. More than 132 students visited companies that
included: Pitney Bowes International Headquarters, Mott's,
Xerox, Factset, Meta Group, UBS Warburg, the Westin and
Sheraton Hotels. Job shadowing made the front page of "The
Advocate" newspaper with a picture of 2 students shadowing the
chef at The Westin.
DELAWARE
- Career professionals from all occupations hosted over
1,200 students and over 80 businesses in Delaware. A full-page
story on Groundhog Job Shadow Day made Delaware Business
published by the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce.
FLORIDA
Orange County
- Central Florida Central Florida Hotel & Lodging
Association -- Three students will accompany Rich Maladecki,
president, and learn firsthand not only about the effects that
the tragedy of September 11 has had on the local hospitality
industry, but what the local tourism businesses are doing to
recover and attract even more visitors to the Central Florida
community.
- The Orlando Sentinel -- Two students, one from Winter
Park Tech/Digital Design and one from Lake Mary High, will
"shadow" Kathy Waltz, publisher, participate in an editorial
meeting, tour the facility, and spend time with other senior
staff and writers.
- Orange County Public Schools -- Two students, one from
Winter Park High School and one from Edgewater High School,
will shadow Ron Blocker, Superintendent of Orange County
Schools. The students will experience what it's like to be the
superintendent of a large school system and also receive an
overview of how the department is managed.
- City of Orlando -- Two students, one from Dr. Phillips
High School and one from Apopka High School, will shadow Mayor
Glenda Hood and experience "a day in the life of the Mayor."
They will attend a ribbon cutting for a new distribution
center opening and meet with other members of the mayor's
staff.
- Hyatt Grand Cypress Resort -- Seventeen students from Oak
Ridge High School will tour various departments including food
and beverage, sales, reservations, front desk, engineering,
banquets, recreation, human resources, housekeeping, marketing
and security, learning everything that it takes to make a
resort an operational success.
Osceola County
- Celebration Health -- Eleven students who are
dual-enrolled in collegiate-level courses with Valencia
Community College and high school courses at Gateway High
School will tour the patient care facility, the
state-of-the-art physical therapy center, the hospital
pharmacy and nursing stations. At approximately 10:30 a.m.,
the students will dress in scrubs and observe a surgery.
- Seminole County Buca di Beppo -- Fourteen students from
Winter Springs High School will go through orientation,
participate in pre-opening activities, and assist in serving a
family-style lunch to patrons. Buca di Beppo is normally
closed for lunch but is opening especially for these students
in Job Shadow, donating 10% of the lunch proceeds to the high
school.
- Charles Schwab & Company, Inc. -- Twenty-nine students
from the Finance Academy at Lake Brantley High School, a
longtime partner of Junior Achievement, will observe the
business of financial services offered at Charles Schwab &
Company.
West Central Florida
- Home Shopping Network -- 10 students spent the day
shadowing at HSN, Tampa Bay's major Job Shadow Day sponsor.
Each student auditioned for one on-air spot to sell gourmet
delights on the 2PM live broadcast 2/1/02.
- Daytime at News Channel 8 -- A Tampa high school student
co-hosted Tampa Bay's hour long, live, morning entertainment
show Daytime.
- Clear Channel -- 9 Tampa Bay students spent the day at
Clear Channel Radio, visiting on air 970 WFLA, 93.3 FLZ, 620
The Sports Animal, 98 Rock, Star 95.7 and 100.7 Mix.
- WFLA News Channel 8 (NBC Affiliate) -- Student shadowed
morning news anchor Gayle Guyardo.
- Bay News 9 -- Student shadowed Business reporter Sandra Guffey.
- WFTS Channel 28 (ABC affiliate) Evening News -- Students

HAWAII

- Former Miss Hawaii, Billie Takaki, was on hand with her
shadow on February 1 as the Governor of Hawaii signed a
proclamation for Groundhog Job Shadow Day in Hawaii. The
Lieutenant Governor Mazie Hirono also hosted a shadow.
- The Honolulu Star-Bulletin published two great photos of
job shadow kids, Saturday 2/2 and Sunday 2/3.
ILLINOIS
- JA Chicago, Chicago, IL, had a live broadcast on the
local Fox morning show from the Sheraton Hotel (Starwood
Resorts). Students dressed in hotel attire. WMAQ telecasted
the event and Cory McPherrin, the Fox sports anchor addressed
all the students together in the grand ballroom of the
Sheraton for lunch.
MASSACHUSETTS
- Monster.com kicked off Groundhog Job Shadow Day by
hosting 75 Junior Achievement students in their Maynard
headquarters. CEO Jeff Taylor hosted fourteen-year-old
Courtney Martin of McLean, Virginia, niece of Claire Martin,
who is newly elected to the Board of JA International.
- Springfield Postmaster John Steele presented Ken Green,
President of JA of Western Massachusetts, with an enlargement
of the Postal Service's new Mentoring a Child stamp. Six
eighth-graders from Duggan Middle School shadowed Springfield
postal employees during the day. The 34-cent commemorative
stamp, issued in February, pays tribute to the thousands of
volunteers who offer friendship, guidance, and support to
young people through mentoring.
MAINE
- Junior Achievement of Maine matched 500 local employees
from Diversified Communications, Idexx Laboratories, Anthem
Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the cities of Portland and
Westbrook, with 1,000 students on February 1.
MINNESOTA
- Many businesses participated in the Minneapolis/St. Paul
area. American Express hosted 125 students from three area
high schools. Best Buy Corporate hosted around 110 students
from Richfield Middle School. The Four Points Sheraton in
Minneapolis took a class of 4th graders. The students had a
glimpse of all areas of the hotel business; kitchen, hosting,
housekeeping and engineering.
- General Mills hosted abut 50 students from Cedar Manor
Intermediate School. The students got the chance to tour the
Betty Crocker Kitchens as well as spend time in the IDEA ZONE,
a creative brainstorming for marketing ideas.
MISSISSIPPI
- JA Mississippi, Jackson, MS Lanier students shadowed
Eaton employees on February 5th. The students seemed really
interested and involved. It seemed that everyone - students,
Eaton employees, Lanier counselor, Lanier teacher, etc. - was
very pleased and had a GREAT time!
NORTH CAROLINA
- JA of Northwest North Carolina, Winston-Salem, NC,
established a partnership with students at High Point
University and administration at Thomasville Middle School to
compliment their Job Shadow experience. (Thomasville is the
home of Thomasville Furniture. The school wanted to encourage
the students to explore many career options other than
furniture and GJSD fit the bill.) The story appeared in the
Thomasville Times February 19th edition.
- JA of Northwest NC also received coverage in the Winston
Salem Journal, March 6 edition for its involvement at Truliant
Federal Credit Union's headquarters in Winston-Salem on March
5.
NEW HAMPSHIRE

- Working with New Hampshire International Speedway and
Junior Achievement of New Hampshire, Fox Sports Net arranged
for JA student, John Miller, 14, of Merrimack, NH, to travel
to one of the largest NASCAR events of the year, the Daytona
500. Miller shadowed the television production teams from Fox
Sports Net's NASCAR This Morning and participated in practice
television interviews with Supercuts (Busch Series) race team
Kerry Earnhardt and owners Terry Bradshaw and Armando Fitz.
NEW YORK

- Katie Couric was also joined by Matt Lauer, Al Roker, and
Ann Curry of NBC's "Today" show as part of a second job shadow
experience, including almost four minutes on-air with the
students. Student shadows also appeared on CBS's "Early Show"
and ABC's "Good Morning America."
- Participants included: NBC's "Today Show," CBS' "Early
Show," WNBC-TV, WABC-TV, Z-100, WKTU-FM, Viacom, Arthur
Andersen, Bank of NY, Gap Corporate, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan
Chase Bank, Money-Time Inc., Money Magazine - Time Inc.,
Morgan Stanley, New York Life Insurance, Prudential
Securities, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Random House, Inc. and
Time Out New York.
- Junior Achievement of Central New York kicked off job
shadowing at the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce Business
Show January 24.
OHIO
- JA of Greater Cincinnati/Northern had Job Shadow exposure
on Channel 12 WKRC and Channel 9 WCPO. Over 2300 students
participated and 111 companies.
TENNESSEE
- Nashville hosted a "Music Row Groundhog Job Shadow Day,"
where students shadowed at major music companies, the Ryman
Theatre and the Grand Ole Opry. A kickoff event downtown
allowed students to meet musicians, hear a performance and
participate in a Q&A session.
TEXAS
- Former President George H.W. Bush helped launch Groundhog
Job Shadow Day 2002 by hosting Junior Achievement of Houston
student Anibeth Turcios from Smiley High School in Houston.
The president has cheerfully hosted shadows for three years in
a row now.
- On January 31, seven Junior Achievement students from
Austin, Texas shadowed the meteorologist and anchors at the
local Fox affiliate. They were on air almost the entire 5
hours, one student got to read the top stories at noon
UTAH

- Jeff Taylor, president and CEO of Monster.com and TMP
Interactive, hosted two JA of Utah students during the 2002
Olympic games. Pictured with them is Katie Couric of NBC's
"Today" show. The students also got to shadow Taylor while he
was being interviewed on "Today." No word yet on new agents
for the shadows.
