Congratulations to the 2008 Junior achievement
AWARD AND scholarship winners!
Junior Achievement of Chicago, the top provider of economic education programs for Chicago-area youth, held its 2008 Scholarship Recipient Award Presentation on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the Union League Club in Chicago. This year, $159,000 in scholarships and awards were presented to 30 outstanding high school students. Each of the scholarship winners has participated in various Junior Achievement programs.
The top award -- the Colonel Henry Crown Scholarship -- provides $20,000 over the course of four years at an accredited college and includes a paid summer internship at a Henry Crown affiliated company. Scholarships were presented by Richard Robb, Vice President of Henry Crown and Company, to the following recipients:
Ø Isabella Martinez of Streamwood High School, who plans to attend DePaul University
Ø Aleia Mays of Thornton Township High School, who plans to attend Xavier University
Ø Mary Rogers of Lemont High School, who plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Ø Kamaya Thompson of Dr. Martin Luther King College Preparatory High School, who plans to attend Howard University
In 2007, Allstate and Leo Burnett celebrated the 50th anniversary of their partnership, to honor this accomplishment Allstate and Leo Burnett each contributed $25,000 to JA’s scholarship fund enabling 5 students who look to pursue marketing or public relations as a major in college to receive a $10,000 scholarship. The five recipients of the Allstate & Leo Burnett 50th Anniversary Scholarship are: Colleen White from St. Francis High School, Jesus Popoca from Whitney Young High School, Lauren Moza from Naperville Central High School, Erin Lynch from Naperville Central High School, and Nate Greensphan from Highland Park High School.
The Perlstein Foundation Scholarship of $5,000 was presented to Marcel Anthony, a home schooled student from Hopkins Park.
The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation sponsored seven scholarships in total:
Ø Nancy Rong of Thomas Kelly High School - $3,000
Ø Sabrina Howard of Whitney Young High School - $2,500
Ø Danielle Caldwell of Thornton Township High School - $2,500
Ø Angel Morales of Taft High School - $500*
Ø Cynthia Villanueva of Thomas Kelly High School - $500*
Ø Sergio Gonzalez of Thomas Kelly High School - $500*
Ø Rocio Pilar of Thomas Kelly High School - $500*
*The above $500 Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Scholarships were awarded to Junior Achievement “High School Heroes”. “High School Heroes” are outstanding high school students who not only participated in the Junior Achievement curriculum, but also volunteered their time in a classroom to teach Junior Achievement and serve as a role model to elementary students.
Three Anita K. Hoffmann Scholarships were awarded (These scholarships are made possible by Anita K. Hoffmann, a Junior Achievement of Chicago Board Member):
Ø Danielle Smith of Chicago Vocational High School – $2,000
Ø Samantha Klug of West Leyden High School - $1,000
Ø Vanessa Pulido of Thomas Kelly High School – $1,000
Other scholarship recipients were:
Ø Katie Dunlap of Lake Central High School - Family of John W. Rogers scholarship for $1,000
Ø Julie Evans of Warren Township High School - Family of John W. Rogers scholarship for $1,000
Ø Elizabeth Gassner of Naperville Central High School - Fourteenth Annual Alvin Cohn Scholarship Award for $1,000
Ø Laura Meyers of Rich Central High School - Fourteenth Annual Alvin Cohn Scholarship Award for $1,000
Ø Matthew Cudzillo of Morton High School – The “Friends of Alvin Cohn” Scholarship Award for $1,000
Ø Heather Hanson of Victor J. Andrew High School - First Savings Bank of Hegewisch scholarship for $1,000
Ø Allen Kus of Marmion Academy – HSBC – North America scholarship for $1,000
Ø Katie Walburn of Montini Catholic High School – HSBC – North America scholarship for $1,000
Ø Ariel Burton of Whitney Young High School - Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP scholarship for $1,000
Awards were also given to Officer of the Year and Company of the Year winners. These awards were presented to students participating in JA’s Company Program. Through JA’s Company Program, students organize and operate an actual business enterprise and elect officers to serve in leadership roles for their companies.

Nate Greensphan from Highland Park High School – President of the Year
Ashley Basiorka of Lemont High School – V.P. of Finance of the Year
Mike Storti of Deerfield High School – V.P. of Human Resources of the Year
Kristine Ankus of Lemont High School – V.P. of Marketing of the Year
Jessica Solarski of Lemont High School – V.P. of Production of the Year
Mary Rogers of Lemont High School – Sales Person of the Year
Kristina Ankus of Lemont High School also received the Kraft Foods Top “Officer of the Year” $1,000 scholarship award. The award was determined through an essay competition for all officer finalists.
Additionally, we would also like to recognize a partnership that took place this year involving Banco Popular, Robert Morris College and Junior Achievement of Chicago. The partnership involved a donation from the Banco Popular foundation to support JA programs in the City and South Suburbs where Robert Morris College students served as volunteers to mentor and teach the JA curriculum. A portion of this donation was allocated to Robert Morris students for scholarship opportunities. The five Robert Morris College student recipients of the Banco Popular Scholarship, who are dedicated Junior Achievement volunteers and serve as wonderful role models in our communities, are: Jose Zavala who received $2,000, Taha Rizvi who received $1,000, Carol Hart who received $1,000, Isela Victor and Leslie Theis both who received $500.
