"Lancer World"

       In the third grade Junior Achievement program, students learn about Our City. They study how a city works, and what sorts of businesses are necessary to a thriving community. One of the activities highlights the newspaper, what goes into writing one, what sorts of jobs are involved in its production, and how it can influence readers in Our City.

       One of our classroom teachers and JA consultant Edward Woods III came up with a novel way to reinforce classroom lessons.They divided the students into groups, and asked each group to write a piece on one of the JA lessons they had studied in the Our City program. Included are articles on:

• Construction and Blueprints
• Community Zones
• Banking & Borrowing
• Newspapers
• Running a Restaurant
• Site visit to Michigan Works!

       Those students who didn't think they could write soon learned otherwise, with the encouragement of teacher, consultant, and their peers! The writing was begun during the time set aside for JA, but the classroom teacher allowed regular class time for polishing and editing. When the articles were finished, photos were added, and Mr. Woods formatted everything into a four-page, full-color, illustrated newspaper.
