Pitney Bowes engineers the flow of communication for over two million customers worldwide. For this reason, the company focuses its giving programs on literacy and education, the basic building blocks of communication and community well-being. The Pitney Bowes Literacy & Education Fund was established to further the company’s interest in these critical areas.

In 2005 the Pitney Bowes Literacy & Education Fund donated a $1 million multi-year grant to JA Worldwide to develop JA America Works. This JA program educates middle grade students about America’s rich and storied economic history. Program content includes topics/themes including:

  • Natural Resources

  • Agriculture

  • Transportation

  • Communication

  • Industrialization

  • Immigration

Pitney Bowes Literacy & Education Fund along with JA Worldwide commissioned a poll which showed that students exhibit a strong interest in business and have learned basic facts of business history. JA America Works is designed to take students to the next level by linking business history with entrepreneurial principles. The program has the potential to reach students in more than 2,200 middle schools nationwide.

What’s New with the Partnership

  • Building on the strong partnership of both organizations, the Pitney Bowes Literacy & Education Fund funded the implementation of the final version of JA America Works.  JA America Works has become popular with students, teachers and volunteers who are enjoying the lessons learned through this powerful program.

  • During the 2006-07 program year a summative evaluation of JA America Works was completed, showing the program was robust and that valuable learning was taking place for students participating in the program.

  • Through the support of Pitney Bowes Literacy & Education Fund, twenty-one JA Members recently received implementation grants of $5,000 and $10,000.  JA Members will use these grants to expand the reach of JA America Works in their local communities.
