It's a Small World
FedEx believes that educating and inspiring leaders is vital to the future. Globalization and on-time logistics have changed businesses around the world. With support from FedEx, children everywhere are learning the value of business and free enterprise and how to succeed in a global market economy. They believe in Junior Achievement (JA) because we improve educational outcomes, inspire participation in global trade, and provide access to opportunities.
FedEx and Junior Achievement have worked together since 1997. FedEx has not only contributed financially to Junior Achievement; their employees also volunteer their time in the classroom. In 2007-08, FedEx supplied more than 356 volunteers around the world. In addition to significant volunteer participation, FedEx provides 10 board members to JA Member Offices both in the U.S. and internationally, including Michael Ducker, President, International, FedEx Express, who joined the Junior Achievement Board of Directors in 2000. Also of note, Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President and CEO of FedEx Corporation is a U.S. Business Hall of Fame Laureate, inducted in 1998.
"Our collaboration with JA underscores the power of access. Students involved in this program will have access to JA programs and also to their peers from around the world as they exchange innovative ideas and business strategies. By providing this access, we can begin to build the entrepreneurial leadership that will ultimately transform lives and shape the future of communities across the globe."
— Michael L. Ducker, President, International FedEx Express
What’s New
FedEx is providing a three-year, $1 million grant to implement the International Trade Challenge in conjunction with the JA Company Program in 11 Asia-Pacific countries. This grant also includes establishing new JA operations in five Asia-Pacific countries where JA does not currently exist.
In 2007, FedEx hosted the inaugural Junior Achievement/FedEx Express International Trade Challenge; an annual competition designed to help develop the entrepreneurial spirit of young people in the Asia-Pacific region. Teams present business strategies and tactics they would use to market their selected products in an overseas market.
With an additional two-year grant of $982,000 FedEx is sponsoring the regional student company competitions that lead up to the JA Global Student Company of the Year. In 2011, this competition will bring together JA students from around the world, Europe, North American, Latin America, and Asia Pacific for a unique and exciting cross-cultural experience. Top student companies will participate in the final competition to select the best student enterprise of the year. This event is the pinnacle of a year's worth of unrivaled entrepreneurial experience that will emphasize the acquisition of solid business skills and the importance of teamwork.
In conjunction with the JA Global Student Company of the Year competition, students will also compete for the FedEx Global Access Award that recognizes the team that demonstrates the most comprehensive understanding of global trade.
