Alumni :: Remember When

The year was 1986.  The then-100-year-old Statue of Liberty was in dire need of repair.  Restoration costs were estimated at tens of millions of dollars.

Former Junior Achievement president Karl Flemke said at the time, "The restoration campaign is a natural fit for Junior Achievement students.  Our roots are planted in the American way of life and the statue is a symbol to the world of the dreams and aspirations that way of life makes possible."

JA student companies from across the country committed to raise $100,000 toward the "Save the Lady" campaign.  It worked.  Today a small plaque on Ellis Island honors those caring, teen-aged corporate citizens.
