Reginald Jones distinguished himself time and again as an extraordinarily talented troubleshooter at GE. He turned its air conditioning unit into a profit maker. As head of the supply company division, he turned losses into gains by decreasing the number of staff and cutting overhead. When he became chief executive of GE in 1972, his masterful command of strategic planning and financial controls enabled GE to survive. Though besieged by inflation, energy shortages, and two major recessions, GE made profit gains in all but one year and produced high returns on invested capital. |
