Conrad Hilton bought a small hotel in Texas in 1919 that became the cornerstone of his hotel chain. When the stock market crashed in 1929, he had to close off floors and take out telephones to stay in business. Hilton emerged from the Depression with control of only five hotels, but bankers and investors who had watched his long struggle were impressed. Conrad bought hotels across the country and soon built foreign hotels.
