James Hill settled in St. Paul, Minnesota, a region that was in desperate need of transportation. He launched steamers on the Red River and was an agent for the St. Paul & Pacific. This railroad became the first link of Hill's Great Northern, which eventually stretched to the Puget Sound. Hill controlled the Great Northern, the Northern Pacific, and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. He knew every mile of the Great Northern and helped design the Stone Arch Bridge over the Mississippi River. |
