Henry Heinz started peddling his homegrown produce when he was 12. He increased the demand for his products by grating them. In 1869 he took a partner and named the company Heinz & Noble. It rapidly acquired a bustling office in Chicago and a vinegar plant in St. Louis. In 1875 Heinz & Noble went bankrupt, but Heinz struggled back and in 1888 he formed the H.J. Heinz Co. With his old-world respect for food and new-world merchandising, the company grew rapidly. |
