Edward Harriman started his own brokerage firm with money he borrowed from an uncle. In 1881 he invested in the Lake Ontario Southern Railroad. He sold it to the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1884 for a huge profit. In 1893 Harriman joined a group dedicated to resurrecting the bankrupt Union Pacific Railroad. He traveled over each mile of the railroad and made drastic improvements. He also modernized and improved the Southern Pacific and the Central Pacific.
