George Halas helped establish the National Football League in 1920. He played for the Chicago Bears for 10 years and coached them for 40. He was never president of the NFL but he was its de facto leader for decades. He helped establish the player draft. Halas saw the potential of television, showing Chicago games on a local station as early as 1947. He also talked his fellow owners into the 1966 merger between the NFL and the AFL.
