Florence Nightingale Graham worked in nursing and held several clerical jobs. She decided to change her name to Elizabeth Arden and open a Fifth Avenue beauty salon. It was lavishly furnished with $6,000 borrowed from a relative. Arden followed every business detail from cleaning the premises, to training, consulting, and editing advertising copy. Her salons in cities around the world gave the business the necessary panache while her preparations, sold in “smart shops everywhere,” provided the bulk of the profits.
