During World War II, Sir Ian K. MacGregor advised the British government about tank design and ran a plant with 2,500 employees. The British government later sent him to Washington to deal with technical aspects of arms purchasing. He decided to stay in the United States after the war and in 1957 took charge of Climax Molybdenum’s diversification program. He put AMAX in the aluminum business, diversified its holdings in other metals, acquired huge coal deposits, and developed the Henderson Mine.
