Henry Luce and Briton Hadden established the weekly newsmagazine Time in 1923. It took them 42 weeks to raise $86,000 and sell 6,000 trial subscriptions. When Hadden died in 1929, the company was profitable. Luce then launched Fortune to breach the walls of corporate secrecy and explore the changing relations of business and government. Luce next introduced Life, which greatly impacted the way Americans looked at the world. Luce’s organizational and business genius translated his youthful dreams of keeping people well informed into a billion-dollar institution.
