Robert. Kleberg, Sr. assumed responsibility for the King Ranch when Richard King the founder of the ranch died in 1885. Kleberg’s biggest concern was a critical shortage of water. His cattle could reach only five percent of the ranch's grass because of the limited access to water. Kleberg drilled for water for 14 years, eventually hitting pure artesian water at 5321 feet. The ranch produced better grasses and better cattle, culminating in the fabled Santa Gertrudis breed that would spread the "running W" brand across five million acres around the globe.
