William Durant made his first fortune in the horse carriage trade. He came out of semi-retirement to reorganize a failing Buick Motors, which only sold 16 cars in 1904. By 1908, Buick was selling nearly 9,000 cars a year and occupied the largest automobile factory in the world at Flint, Michigan. By 1910, Durant had purchased 17 companies including Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Pontiac.
