Arthur V. Davis worked for a company that reduced alumina to aluminum through an electrolytic process invented by Charles Hall. The process could not be interrupted so Davis and Hall worked 12-hour shifts, seven days week. The process worked, but production costs were too high because of the low volume. Andrew Mellon helped them by providing financing while Davis managed growing sales. When other manufacturers could not or would not turn this new metal into salable products, Davis set up fabricating plants. He ran the Aluminum Co. of America from 1910 until 1948.
