Robert O. Anderson, at the age of 24, bought a small oil refinery in New Mexico. During World War II, he supplied gasoline to air bases in the Southwest and diesel fuel to Los Alamos. After the war, he bought a California refinery for $2 million, made improvements, and sold it two years later for $23 million. In 1963 he merged his operation with Atlantic Refining and in 1966 merged Atlantic with Richfield, providing plentiful reserves of oil. In 1969 ARCO bought Sinclair and it became the sixth largest oil company in the United States. |
