James E. Casey founded a delivery service when he was 19 years of age with a phone, two bicycles, six messengers, and $100. He advertised that his Merchants Parcel Service had the "Best Service and Lowest Rates" and was very concerned about it being the top of the line in its field. Casey changed the name to United Parcel Service in 1919. The business grew rapidly but Casey was strict about maintaining performance standards and built a corporate culture almost religiously devoted to serving both the customer and the company. |
