Raymond Chambers, the founder of the Amelior Foundation, is a philanthropist and humanitarian, directing most of his efforts toward at-risk youth and helping to re-build the city of Newark, New Jersey. He is the founding and co-chairman of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, co-founder of the National Mentoring Partnership, founding chairman of the Points of Light Foundation, and founder, with Colin Powell, of America’s Promise-The Alliance for Youth. His business background was in finance and investing. In 1981, he and former Secretary of the Treasury, Bill Simon, formed one of the most successful leveraged buyout firms; Wesray Capital Corp. Wesray began the buyout movement with the fabled Gibson Greeting Cards’ transaction. Over the next eight years, until Chambers retired to pursue his philanthropic objectives, Wesray purchased over 30 companies, including Wilson Sporting Goods, Western Auto Stores, Wearever, Proctor Silex, RKO Pictures, Atlas Van Lines, Permian Oil Corp., and Avis Car Rental.
