Charles Cawley graduated from St. Benedicts Preparatory School in 1958 and from Georgetown University in 1962.
In 1972, he joined Maryland National Bank and later in 1982, he founded a subsidiary of Maryland National Bank called MBNA America Bank. When the company began, it had 90 people and $200 million in assets. Over the next 22 years, the company became independent through a public offering of stock. During the years through 2003, when Cawley retired, MBNA grew to $118.5 billion in loans, more than 50 million customers, 29,000 people, and a market capitalization of more than 34 billion dollars. During that time, earnings per share increased an average of 23 percent a year. Today, MBNA has offices in the United States, Canada, England, Spain, and Ireland and is the largest independent credit card lender in the world. Cawley and his wife, Julie, have two children and four grandchildren. |
