August A. Busch Jr. was the third generation head of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., and a giant in the American brewing industry. During a 67-year career as a businessman, civic leader, and sportsman, Busch’s business acumen, showmanship, and intense commitment to his company, community, and country made “Gussie,” his nickname, a household word in St. Louis and in business and sporting circles around the world. Busch once spoke of the three “major love affairs” of his life, “First, there has been my family; second, the company, which bears the proud name of Anheuser-Busch; and third, this great community of St. Louis … and the friendly people who have made this such a wonderful place to live, to do business, and to raise our families.” |
