Andrew Carnegie came with his family to the United States from Scotland in 1848. He started working in a cotton mill at age 13. In 1865, he started his own business that eventually became the Carnegie Steel Company. Carnegie launched the steel industry in Pittsburgh and was successful because he maintained strict control of costs, thereby producing steel for less than his competitors. He sold the empire he forged in the steel furnaces of Pittsburgh in 1901, leaving him to retire from business life as the richest man in the world. |
