Penrose came to Colorado from a prominent Philadelphia family in 1892 and found fame and fortune in the Colorado Gold Rush. Penrose contributed to his community by committing his fortune to changing Colorado Springs, Colorado into a world-class community. He built the world-famous Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in 1918. Penrose also created the El Pomar Foundation, one of the largest foundations in the Rocky Mountain West, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and fostered the growth of Penrose Hospital. |
