Maggie Lena Walker was the first woman bank president in the United States. Walker founded St. Luke Penny Savings Bank of Richmond, Virginia. She later served as chairman of the board of directors when the bank merged with two others to become The Consolidated Bank & Trust Co., the oldest, continually African-American operated bank in the United States. In addition to her business ventures, Walker was influential in the community as well, leading the Independent Order of St. Luke, serving as a member of groups such as the Virginia Interracial Commission, as well as on the executive board of the NAACP.
