Chemist John Dorrance devised a method to remove water from soup, thereby reducing canning and shipping costs to one-third. In an era when pre-packaged foods consisted mainly of vegetables, Dorrance’s discovery became extremely popular. In 1911 the Campbell factory in New Jersey became one of the first to distribute a name-brand food product nationwide. Dorrance accumulated stock in the small, private outfit until he acquired the entire company in 1915. He ran Campbell until he died at age 57. |
