Juan Trippe attended flying school and learned radio communications and Morse code before entering Yale in 1917. At Yale he raised money to start his first airline--Long Island Airways. In 1927, helped by investments, Trippe took over Pan Am. He first piloted Pan Am to Latin America with U.S. mail and then passengers. When Charles Lindbergh became America's hero, Trippe hired him to establish the company's over-ocean routes, which included Pan Am's famed Clipper service to China. By the early 1960s Pan Am flew into 86 countries on six continents. |
