Sir John Templeton was a native of Tennessee. He won a scholarship to Yale University and earned an economics degree by selling advertising and playing poker. He started as a money manager in 1940. Five years later he traveled from New York to Toronto to start the Templeton Growth Fund. His many feats have earned him the distinction of being one of the most compelling figures in the history of the mutual fund.
