Charles L. Brown was appointed chief executive of AT&T in 1979, after he had worked for AT&T in 23 jobs in 10 cities. As chief executive, he had to resolving the antitrust case against AT&T. He agreed to strip away AT&T's regional phone companies. Brown retained for AT&T its big, renowned manufacturing and research subsidiaries and the long distance phone lines. The new AT&T started with 365,000 employees. After a period of disorientation, it began achieving excellence in research and development, while maintaining about 70 percent of the expanding market for long-distance phone service. |
