Jacob Henry Schiff joined the investment-banking house of Kuhn Loeb & Co. in 1875. He lured the Pennsylvania Railroad away from the Drexel banking house and turned Kuhn Loeb into the leading banker to the railroads. Schiff led the reorganization of the Union Pacific and was crucial in gaining his client’s representation on the Northern Pacific Railroad board. His firm was the foremost financial backer of Japan during the Russo-Japanese War–for which the Japanese Emperor Meiji awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun. |
