James Rouse revitalized Boston’s city center by developing a cluster of almost abandoned buildings. The city’s lenders thought he was crazy, but he scraped together the money and 100,000 people showed up for opening day. Quincy Market’s restaurants, food counters, shops, pushcarts, clowns, bands, and jugglers attracted10 million visitors a year. He followed his success with the Gallery at Market East in Philadelphia, New York's South Street Seaport, and similar restorations in San Francisco, Milwaukee, and St. Louis. He even started a town, Columbia, Maryland, with a thriving population of 55,000. |
