Monroe J. Rathbone became chief executive of Standard Oil of New Jersey in 1960. At that time, the oil industry and the company appeared to have promising and unsurprising futures. Rathbone, however, saw trouble ahead. He believed that the demand for oil would produce scarcity, giving the Middle East oil-producing countries the ability to abuse buyers. Listening to Rathbone’s advice, Standard Oil searched for oil outside the Middle East. His plan produced 19.3 billion barrels of oil, more than any other company.
