John Henry Patterson worked as a canal toll collector and gradually made headway in the coal business. Believing that clerks were pocketing receipts, he ordered two cash registers made by a Dayton saloonkeeper. Patterson's income rose immediately. He was so impressed with the cash register that he bought the business for $6,500. Patterson organized a systematic selling campaign that brought the products of his National Cash Register Company to elegant shops and crossroads stores. He deluged prospective purchasers with well-crafted mailings and prodded his Inventions Department for constant improvements. |
