William Blackie joined Caterpillar in 1939 as controller and remained with the company for 40 years. He became chairman in 1966 and retired in 1972. His communication skills and combination of aggressive and defensive strategies took Caterpillar from a small U.S. based factory in Peoria, Illinois to international manufacturing. He was able to show that every foreign area where Caterpillar manufactured became a better market for Caterpillar exports from the United States.
