Adolph Ochs bought the Chattanooga Daily Times for $250. He found a market for thorough, unbiased news coverage, untainted by sensationalism and the paper became a success. Ochs bought The New York Times in 1896 and used the same strategy. The once proud paper, had degenerated into a nonentity with a circulation of 9,000. Circulation jumped to 20,000 during his first year as publisher and soared to 75,000 in after Ochs lowered the price from three cents to a penny. The Times is the standard against which other newspapers are judged. |
