Robert Noyce and a group of colleagues started Fairchild Semiconductor, where they invented the microchip. Noyce was the first person to suggest the use of silicon, which immediately set the standard for the industry. He left Fairchild in 1968 to start Intel. There he reduced the price of computer memory by a factor of 100. It paid off handsomely. Noyce retired from Intel to head Sematech, a research consortium of major U.S. semiconductor manufacturers.
