In 1871, he became a partner in Drexel, Morgan and Company and it soon became one of the most powerful banking houses. Pierpont began a career in railroad organization when he arranged the merger of the New York Railroad and New York Lines. Within three years, he extended his influence to railways in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Morgan was so trusted that he had the power to stop financial panics and perform other functions now assigned to the Federal Reserve.
