Joseph Miller turned Cummins Engine Co. around by connecting Cummins production with its potential markets. When Miller took over Cummins, many of the biggest truck manufacturers were making their own engines. He persuaded trucking companies that they would reduce costs by specifying Cummins engines when they ordered trucks. Miller turned the company into a billion-dollar business. In 1978 Cummins Engine Co. had 46 percent of the U.S. market in diesel engines for trucks.
