Arnold O. Beckman develop a device in 1934 for measuring the acidity of lemon juice. He produced a pH meter that was less fragile and more sensitive than any on the market. Several laboratory supply houses told him he might be able to sell 600 meters over a 10-year period. Beckman proceeded to sell 600 meters in just two years. His company went on to develop numerous scientific instruments for commercial use.
