Retired USAF Brigadier General Robert F. McDermott became head of USAA in 1969. He transformed the principally automobile insurer into the first successful one-stop supermarket for financial services ranging from insurance to banking to investments. He led USAA to become a national role model for service through automation and by making USAA a top company in the United States to work for by providing education, training, and great working conditions for employees. His "Golden Rule" philosophy was the basis of USAA's service success. During his 25 years at USAA assets owned and managed climbed from $207 million to over $31 billion. |
