Frederick Maytag moved to Iowa in 1880 and sold farm equipment. In 18 months he saved $800 (90 percent of his wages) and bought a share of the company. In 1907, Maytag produced his first washing machine and was the eighth-largest washing machine producer in 1920. At 64, he sold his Gyrafoam model that combined an aluminum tub and washing action to push water through the clothes rather than dragging the clothes through the water. The Gyrafoam catapulted his company to market leader. |
