Samuel Goldwyn and Louis Mayer were fierce competitors. They spoke to each other rarely, but shared the glory of the golden days of Hollywood. Goldwyn's feelings about the public's mood made him a Hollywood virtuoso. He produced comedies in the Roaring Twenties, musicals to the music of Irving Berlin and George Gershwin during the Depression, and films of heroic patriotism during World War II. Louis Mayer was not an entrepreneur or a creator, but he was a first-rate manager. Mayer turned MGM into the industry's best studio. |
