Evaluation of JA Elementary After-School
Pilot Program, JA More than Money
The JA More than Money curriculum includes six sessions for implementation in after-school settings. In 2004, Junior Achievement contracted with Caliber Associates to conduct a formative evaluation of JA More than Money.
The formative evaluation was designed to investigate program implementation and variation; links between program activities and student learning; level of satisfaction with the program among volunteers, participants, and parents; and the modifications necessary to enhance student outcomes. The evaluation collected input from all local program stakeholders with a focus on gathering information related to program implementation, satisfaction, and participant knowledge gains. Information from participants was gathered primarily through surveys and focus groups.
A total of 552 participants from 12 local JA offices were included in the evaluation. The majority of JA More than Money after-school programs were set in an urban environment (59%), followed by suburban (22%), and rural (19%). The majority of participants were between the ages of eight and eleven, and indicated their ethnicity as White (37%), Black/African American (25%), or Latino (19%).
Results indicated that the average content mastery score increased significantly by the end of the program, demonstrating that students were learning new concepts and skills after participating in JA More than Money.
